We love the feeling of Spring in our centres. It’s the perfect time of year for a refresh and to get out into the community and local environment (weather permitting of course!). Our children have been very busy with a myriad of activities that focus on nature, sensory experiences, and integrating core skills like math, literacy, and science through hands-on projects like planting seeds (in eggshells!), nature walks for alphabet hunts, creating symmetry with sponge butterflies, and exploring life cycles (chicks, tadpoles) to teach observation, responsibility, and the wonder of new life in a fun, seasonal way.
Nature & Science Exploration (DO Planet)
- Planting Projects: Plant seeds in eggshells or pots, observe growth, and learn about plant needs and life cycles.
- Nature Walks: Hunt for items matching alphabet letters (A for acorn, B for bird) or explore different textures like grass, stones, and leaves.
- Life Cycles: Watch chicks hatch, tadpoles grow into frogs, or butterflies emerge, often best done in spring as nature awakens.
- Sensory Bins: Explore wet soil, discover earthworms, or create sensory trails with various natural materials.
Arts & Crafts
- Symmetry Art: Make symmetrical butterflies by painting one side of a sponge and pressing it onto paper.
- Flower Power: Decorate pots with acrylic paint or make “gratitude flowers” on printable templates.
- Wind Chimes: Craft chimes from sticks, beads, and shells to listen to on breezy days.
Literacy & Math
- Nature Alphabet Hunt: Find objects for each letter of the alphabet during outdoor walks.
- Counting Games: Use natural items like pebbles or flowers for counting and simple addition/subtraction.
- Writing Journals: Use spring-themed prompts (Earth Day, animals, plants) to practice writing sentences and adding details.
- 3D Shapes: Explore and identify 3D shapes using themed dice games and activities.
Imaginative Play & Gross Motor
- Teddy Bear Picnic: Have an indoor or outdoor picnic with stuffed animals, boosting social skills through pretend play.
- Outdoor Adventures: Explore new playgrounds or nature trails, focusing on new physical skills.
- Animal Actions: Act out seasonal changes or animal movements like hibernating and emerging.
We hope you are enjoying the season as much as we are!
